To start the process check overhead for a rope that connects the opener to the door. If you find that your garage door opener chain falls off the track on which it has been placed you will need to put it back up and then tighten the chain to stop this happening in the future.

Pull the rope in order to release the door from the opener. Once the door is back on track knock the track back into position with a rubber mallet. Reach up and pull the handle to disengage the opener. Chain driven garage door openers should have some slack in the chain for optimal performance.

Separate the garage door opener from the door. Raise and lower the door manually to ensure it is operating properly. Fortunately fixing off track rollers is a simple diy project. This allows you to operate the door manually.

Over time though this slack can increase or the gear and sprocket assembly can wear and the chain may pop off the sprockets. You can put the chain back on your automatic garage door opener using a simple adjustment mechanism.
